Gradient Geothermal and T5 Partner on East Texas Energy Project

High-temperature brines deep beneath East Texas are set to become a dual-purpose resource, as Gradient Geothermal and T5 Smackover Partners launch an integrated project to extract lithium while simultaneously generating baseload power from the same geothermal fluids.

The partnership centers on the deployment of Gradient’s patented HXC Geothermal System, a modular technology designed to capture thermal energy from the mineral-rich brines of the Smackover Formation. By stacking power generation with direct lithium extraction, the collaboration aims to create a more efficient operational model that reduces the environmental footprint of mineral production.

For T5 Smackover Partners, the contract represents a shift toward maximizing the utility of subsurface assets. CEO Ben Burke of Gradient Geothermal noted that the HXC system converts the formation's substantial heat into a reliable energy resource. As the companies move into phase one of development, they intend to demonstrate that geothermal energy and critical-mineral production can function as a single, vertically integrated platform to strengthen domestic supply chains.
