AbbVie's Skyrizi Cleared for Pediatric Psoriasis in Europe
The European Commission has authorized the use of Skyrizi for children and adolescents as young as six suffering from moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. The approval introduces a specialized 55 mg pre-filled syringe, enabling precise weight-based dosing for younger patients who weigh less than 40 kilograms.
This regulatory expansion addresses a significant gap in dermatological care, as nearly 70% of pediatric patients currently rely exclusively on topical treatments despite the chronic nature of their condition. According to AbbVie, the decision follows clinical data from the OptIMMize-1 and OptIMMize-2 trials, which confirmed that the safety profile in pediatric cohorts remains consistent with adult outcomes.
For many children, the condition manifests on visible areas like the face and scalp, often leading to school absenteeism and social challenges. By offering an systemic alternative for those aged six and older, the treatment aims to provide earlier intervention. Nina Magnolo of the University Hospital of Münster noted that this approval allows physicians to better manage the disease's long-term impact through tailored dosing, marking a shift in how pediatric plaque psoriasis is addressed across the region.
