The True Cost of Valve’s Steam Machine

Priced at $1,049, Valve’s new Steam Machine costs nearly double a PlayStation 5, positioning itself less as a traditional console and more as a miniaturized PC. While Valve claims to sell the hardware at cost, the unique engineering of its custom components makes a direct DIY replica impossible to assemble.

The machine’s footprint relies on a custom six-core AMD processor using Zen 4 architecture and a specialized RDNA 3 graphics chip with 8GB of VRAM. These parts sit on a proprietary motherboard paired with a bespoke cooling system that fills the unit's 6-inch frame. Because these components are not sold to the public, consumers cannot source identical parts off the shelf to replicate the device's compact power.

Building a comparable system requires moving to a Mini-ITX motherboard, the smallest consumer standard capable of housing desktop-class CPUs and GPUs. While off-the-shelf alternatives like the Fractal Design Terra offer small form factors, they inevitably result in a larger footprint than Valve’s design. Compact builds currently force a trade-off: either rely on laptop-grade internal components or settle for significantly lower graphical performance.
