Innovative Molecules Begins Phase 2a Trial of Adibelivir
A first patient has received a dose of adibelivir in a Phase 2a clinical trial, marking a transition for Munich-based Innovative Molecules as it tests the drug against recurrent genital herpes. This trial serves as a proof-of-concept study for the novel helicase-primase inhibitor.

The study evaluates the safety, pharmacokinetics, and clinical efficacy of the compound, which targets herpes simplex virus replication through a mechanism distinct from traditional nucleoside analogues. CEO Florian Vogel noted that this milestone validates the company’s maturation into a late-stage clinical developer. The firm is also expanding its virology franchise by advancing a separate candidate targeting the Epstein-Barr virus, which is currently undergoing IND-enabling activities. Joachim Rothe, chairman of the company's advisory board, emphasized that these dual programs position Innovative Molecules to lead in the development of next-generation herpesvirus therapies.
