Sanya Secures Formula E Asian Opener for 2027
Sanya will host the first GEN4-era Formula E race on Chinese soil, anchoring the 2026/27 ABB FIA World Championship as the Asian leg opener on April 17, 2027. Following a successful beachfront return this year, the tropical city cements its status as a primary hub for international sporting events.

The upcoming race is the seventh round of a record-breaking 21-race calendar spanning 13 global cities. Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E, described the coastal circuit as a severe test of driver capability, noting that the decision to bring the advanced GEN4 machinery to Sanya early in the season was intentional. The event serves as a high-profile showcase for the region, coinciding with the maturation of the Hainan Free Trade Port, which recently recorded a 31.2% year-over-year increase in cross-border traveler entries.
To sustain this momentum, Sanya has overhauled its approach to event hosting. The city now leverages a visa-free regime for 86 countries, an extensive network of international flight routes, and a dedicated one-stop approval service designed to bypass traditional bureaucratic hurdles. By integrating global intelligence from 23 overseas promotion offices with a streamlined regulatory framework, the municipal government has transitioned Sanya from an occasional venue to a proactive competitor for world-class championships. Local officials emphasized that the city is currently scaling its infrastructure to ensure these global events become a permanent fixture of its economic and cultural landscape.
