Richard Huffman Tapped for Maryland Higher Education Commission
Governor Wes Moore has appointed Celebree School founder Richard Huffman to the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the body tasked with steering the state's academic and workforce development policies. Confirmed by the state Senate, Huffman will commence his five-year term on July 1, 2026, bringing three decades of private-sector experience to the role.

Huffman, who launched the early childhood education franchise Celebree School in 1994, will now help oversee the alignment of Maryland’s higher education system with the state's broader economic and student success goals. His appointment places him at the center of a complex regulatory framework that balances the interests of the University System of Maryland, community colleges, and independent institutions. The commission functions as a critical bridge between academic planning and the shifting demands of the regional labor market.
Throughout his career, Huffman has focused on the intersection of organizational leadership and talent development, most recently consolidating his business interests under Huffman Family Brands. Reflecting on the appointment, he emphasized that his focus remains on expanding access and empowering Marylanders through educational pathways. Supporters, including Sam Commodari of Celebree School, cited his long-standing commitment to building scalable learning environments as a key asset for the commission's long-term vision.
