Higginbotham Enters South Carolina Market via Turbeville Insurance Deal

Texas-based insurance powerhouse Higginbotham has officially planted its flag in South Carolina, acquiring the Columbia-headquartered Turbeville Insurance Agency. The move grants the employee-owned firm its first foothold in one of the country's fastest-growing states while absorbing one of the region's largest independent brokerages.

Founded in 1991 by William L. "Bill" Turbeville Jr., the agency operates four offices across Columbia, Lexington, Beaufort, and Charleston. With a staff of over 60, the firm brings deep expertise in coastal property, construction, and specialized commercial sectors. For Higginbotham CEO Rusty Reid, the acquisition avoids a cautious entry, opting instead to scale immediately by partnering with a firm that maintains strong community ties.

Turbeville sought the merger to navigate a competitive landscape dominated by national players. The decision rested on Higginbotham’s employee-ownership model, which offers a long-term path for staff to participate in value creation. Clients will retain their existing local teams while gaining access to expanded resources, including Higginbotham’s Day Two Services®, claims advocacy, and specialized support in high-stakes fields like aviation and trucking.
