Law Enforcement Launches Nationwide Crackdown on Impaired Boating
With the Independence Day holiday weekend approaching, law enforcement agencies across the United States are preparing to ramp up patrols for Operation Dry Water. From July 3 to 5, officers will focus on curbing boating under the influence to prevent preventable fatalities during one of the busiest times on the water.

The 2026 campaign kicks off June 29 in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, bringing together departments from California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. This collaborative effort emphasizes that alcohol remains the primary contributing factor in recreational boating deaths. According to the 2024 U.S. Coast Guard statistics, the risks of operating a vessel while impaired are significantly amplified by environmental stressors like sun, heat, and wave action.
Since its inception in 2009, the initiative has removed nearly 8,000 intoxicated operators from waterways. NASBLA Chair Chris Jones underscored that the safest decision remains staying sober before leaving the dock. By combining high-visibility enforcement with public outreach at locations like London Bridge Beach, the program aims to shift behavior and ensure passengers return home safely. Last year, the campaign saw participation from 451 agencies across every state and territory, reflecting a unified commitment to reducing alcohol- and drug-related incidents.
