Nippon Shinyaku eyes global rights for DMD therapy EXG-7001

A new option agreement between Nippon Shinyaku and Elixirgen Therapeutics brings a potential breakthrough for Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients one step closer to reality. Under the deal, the Japanese pharmaceutical giant holds the exclusive right to develop and commercialize the mRNA-based drug EXG-7001, which aims to restore full-length dystrophin protein production.

The investigational therapy, currently in preclinical development, works by expressing full-length human dystrophin regardless of the specific genetic mutation present in a patient. By addressing the protein deficiency directly within muscle cells, the drug seeks to suppress local muscle dysfunction. Elixirgen is now finalizing preparations for upcoming clinical trials in the United States.

"Collaboration is essential in furthering scientific innovation, and we are proud to partner with Elixirgen to expand treatment options for the Duchenne community," said NS Pharma President Yukiteru Sugiyama. Should Nippon Shinyaku exercise its option and secure regulatory approval, its U.S. subsidiary, NS Pharma, will oversee the commercial launch of the treatment. The partnership was brokered by the NS Pharma Innovation Research Partnering team based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
