Chicago Open Kitchens Drivers Launch Strike Over Labor Violations
Drivers and warehouse helpers at Open Kitchens have walked off the job, initiating a strike to protest a series of alleged unfair labor practices. Represented by Teamsters Local 703, the workers are demanding an end to stalling tactics and the immediate negotiation of a fair first collective bargaining agreement.

The work stoppage follows a year of mounting tension between the staff and management. Although employees voted to unionize last year, representatives claim the company has responded with intimidation, retaliatory firings, and consistent delays at the bargaining table. Local 703 has filed multiple charges with the National Labor Relations Board, citing the illegal termination of workers engaged in protected union activity.
Thomas W. Stiede, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 703, stated that management’s conduct left the workforce with no alternative but to picket. The impact of the strike is expected to be felt across the region, as Open Kitchens provides meal delivery services to Chicago Public Schools and various other clients throughout the area. Union leadership, including Teamsters Warehouse Division Director Tom Erickson, emphasized that the workers remain committed to securing a contract that guarantees basic workplace dignity.
