Anthropic Secures Limited Mythos 5 Access After Government Review
Following two weeks of stalled negotiations, the Trump administration has granted Anthropic permission to restore Mythos 5 access for a restricted group of cyber defenders and infrastructure providers. While this marks a breakthrough, the public-facing Fable 5 model remains grounded, with no clear timeline for a wider release.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the shift in a June 26 letter to Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown, citing revised license requirements after the company addressed specific security risks. The government maintains the export control directive issued two weeks ago, which prohibits foreign nationals—including Anthropic’s internal staff—from accessing the models. This carve-out for Mythos 5 mirrors the regulatory approach recently applied to OpenAI’s GPT-5.6, prioritizing domestic infrastructure security over broader availability. Anthropic spokesperson Danielle Ghiglieri stated the company is currently provisioning the approved organizations, though the path forward for the general-use Fable 5 remains subject to ongoing federal oversight.
