Sicona secures $45M ARENA grant for Wollongong battery plant

A $45 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency is set to transform the Illawarra region into a hub for advanced battery manufacturing. The funding allows Sicona Battery Technologies to establish a commercial-scale production facility for its silicon-carbon anode material, SiCx, targeting global supply chain integration.

The proposed facility, currently under assessment for development within BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla precinct, aims to output 230 tonnes of SiCx annually. This technology promises a significant performance leap, boosting lithium-ion energy density by over 20 percent and slashing charging times by more than 40 percent compared to traditional graphite anodes. Because the material integrates directly into existing production lines, the company expects to accelerate its qualification process with original equipment manufacturers.

Beyond electric vehicles, Sicona is positioning its technology to serve high-demand sectors including AI data centers, robotics, and defense. CEO Christiaan Jordaan noted that the project validates Australia’s potential to shift from a raw mineral exporter to a high-value materials manufacturer. ARENA CEO Darren Miller emphasized that the investment serves as a critical step in building domestic manufacturing capabilities. The Wollongong site is projected to generate 36 skilled jobs, marking a major milestone for the company following its recent strategic partnership and investment from Himadri in India. Future expansion plans for the firm include increasing capacity to 6,500 tonnes per annum, with potential for further scaling to 26,500 tonnes.
