American Power Systems expands high-output alternator line

Davenport-based American Power Systems has added the widely used J180 and pad mount configurations to its Ultra Performance at Idle alternator series. The move aims to help heavy-duty vehicle fleets and RV manufacturers mitigate engine load and fuel consumption while maintaining high electrical output during low-RPM operation.

These new configurations are designed to replace larger legacy units, offering a smaller, lighter footprint that reduces strain on front-end engine drives. By increasing power delivery during stop-and-go driving or extended idling, the alternators facilitate faster battery recovery and more consistent performance for demanding mobile applications. According to Amy Lank, President and CEO of American Power Systems, the efficiency gains translate into tangible operating-cost savings for vehicles that rely on significant electrical loads throughout the day.

The hardware is compatible with 12-, 24-, and 48-volt systems, targeting a broad spectrum of users ranging from broadcast production rigs and emergency response vehicles to marine-duty vessels. Beyond improved fuel economy, the updated design features an internal fan intended to lower noise levels compared to traditional high-output alternatives. The product line is now available for integration into existing J180 or pad mount architectures, providing a direct upgrade path for fleets seeking to modernize their onboard power systems.
