VISION House Asheville Seeks to Redefine Resilient Residential Design
Rising from the recovery efforts of a region scarred by Hurricane Helene, a new demonstration project in Asheville, North Carolina, aims to prove that climate-responsive construction and wellness-focused architecture can coexist with long-term affordability in the modern housing market.
Developed by Green Builder Media and the custom construction network Alair Homes, the VISION House Asheville project serves as a testing ground for high-performance building science. Located in the Beaverdam community, the home integrates advanced solar arrays, energy management systems, and water-saving technologies, all housed within a structure designed to withstand severe weather events. The initiative seeks to shift the conversation among buyers from initial purchase price to the total cost of ownership, including long-term maintenance and operational efficiency.
Sara Gutterman, CEO of Green Builder Media, argues that resilience and health are no longer luxury add-ons but the necessary foundation for future housing. As the project progresses through construction and occupancy, the partners plan to document their findings to provide a scalable blueprint for builders across North America. Rob Cecil, CEO of Alair Homes, intends to leverage the firm’s network of nearly 100 builders to export these construction strategies into local markets, effectively turning a single residence into a broader educational resource for the industry.
