Tidal Cuts Royalties for AI Tracks to Protect Human Creators
Starting today, Tidal will strip royalty payments from tracks identified as entirely AI-generated. Rather than implementing a blanket ban on synthetic music, the streaming platform is shifting its financial model to ensure that payouts remain reserved for works written, produced, and performed by human artists.
The new policy, announced alongside a commitment to label fully synthetic tracks with a dedicated icon starting July 15, marks a strategic pivot in how Tidal handles the rise of machine-created content. While the platform has not disclosed the specific detection technology in use, it intends to expand labeling requirements to include tracks that are substantially AI-generated as detection tools become more precise.
Tidal is also shifting some of the burden onto content distributors, expecting them to properly tag AI-assisted uploads. Beyond financial restrictions, the company plans to remove or block content associated with fraudulent activity, specifically targeting high-volume uploads or tracks designed to deceive listeners or mirror the likeness of established artists. This move aligns Tidal with competitors like Spotify and Deezer, which have already deployed verification badges and scanning tools to filter the influx of synthetic media within their ecosystems.
