Google’s Gemini gains autonomy with Personal Intelligence
By granting Gemini access to Gmail, Calendar, and Photos, Google is moving its AI beyond simple command-and-response interactions. The new Personal Intelligence feature allows the model to proactively scan personal data to answer queries without requiring explicit instructions for every individual prompt, marking a shift toward true digital assistance.

This capability represents a significant evolution from the previous iteration of Gemini, which required users to manually trigger connections to Workspace applications. While the AI could previously parse email or calendar entries, it functioned only when explicitly directed. Under the new beta rollout for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, Gemini now autonomously determines when a request necessitates digging into a user's inbox or search history, such as locating a specific concert ticket or scheduling details.
Google maintains that the feature is strictly opt-in, allowing users to granularly control which services the model can access. By automating the retrieval process, the system aims to shed the limitations of legacy voice assistants that required constant babysitting. For now, the integration is being tested through suggested prompts, including personalized book recommendations derived from a user's broader digital footprint, signaling a push toward a more intuitive, context-aware experience.
