The facility serves as a technical training ground for Eskom staff and local youth, focusing on power ICT, cybersecurity, and smart grid maintenance. Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, described the collaboration as a necessary intervention to modernize the grid, noting that high-level technical training is essential to securing the country's economic recovery.

Eskom Board Chairman Dr. Mteto Nyati and Group CEO Dan Marokane framed the initiative as a strategic pivot toward full digitalization. The centre deploys Huawei’s end-to-end ICT solutions to overhaul how the utility handles fault detection and dispatching. By moving away from legacy systems, the partners intend to enhance supply reliability for businesses and households alike. Distribution Group Executive Agnes Mlambo added that the smart classroom environment is specifically designed to rapidly upskill the existing workforce, ensuring that the transition to digital energy management remains sustainable and internally driven.
