AFSP Illinois launches targeted suicide prevention for Minority Mental Health Month

These sessions aim to dismantle historical barriers by providing research-backed suicide prevention tools specifically for Black, African American, and Hispanic populations.

Executive director Angela Cummings emphasizes that the initiative seeks to provide equitable, research-informed resources by meeting community members within their own cultural contexts. The programming spans virtual workshops and a localized gathering in Chicago, focusing on protective factors such as family networks, spiritual traditions, and the mitigation of social stigmas.

The schedule includes a virtual session on July 13 for Hispanic and Latinx communities, followed by an in-person event on July 18 at Sip of Hope Coffee Shop in Logan Square. The series concludes July 29 with an online program designed by Black mental health professionals to foster dialogue within faith and family circles. All events are free, with additional resources available at the AFSP Illinois website.
