Corporate Democrats Align with Billionaire-Backed 'Promise to America'
A group of corporate Democrats has countered recent progressive primary victories by signing a manifesto titled "Promise to America." The document champions capitalism and fiscal discipline, raising questions about its origins as an investigation links the pledge to a political group heavily funded by billionaire donors.
The "Promise to America" manifesto surfaced last month at the WelcomeFest conference, hosted by the Welcome Party. While the group has not been explicitly linked to the funding of the manifesto itself, its financial structure is dominated by the ultra-wealthy. According to a report by Sludge, over 60% of the $10.8 million raised by the Welcome Party’s PAC over the last five years came from billionaire contributors. Major donors include Reid Hoffman, James and Kathryn Murdoch, Michael Bloomberg, and the Walton family.
Progressive voices within the party have dismissed the pledge as a hollow reaction to shifting political currents. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized the document for lacking a substantive affirmative vision, arguing that the corporate wing offers no policy solutions beyond opposing democratic socialism. On the House floor, Rep. Ro Khanna echoed this sentiment, framing the internal party struggle as a choice between maintaining an economy that hoards wealth for the few or moving toward progressive goals like Medicare for All.
