Jury Acquits DC Man Who Hurled Sandwich at Federal Officers
A Washington, DC jury acquitted Sean Dunn on Thursday of misdemeanor assault charges stemming from an August incident where he threw a sandwich at Customs and Border Protection officers. The verdict followed a brief deliberation, ending a case that had become a flashpoint for local opposition to federal immigration enforcement.
Dunn, a former Department of Justice employee, was captured on video shouting at federal officers, calling them fascists and telling them they were unwelcome in the city. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro had initially sought a felony assault charge, but the case was downgraded to a misdemeanor after a grand jury refused to indict on the more serious count. Following the acquittal, Dunn told reporters he was relieved to move on with his life.
Pirro had previously made the case a public spectacle, posting a social media video where she vowed to prosecute the food-tossing transgression to the fullest extent. The trial quickly turned into a cause célèbre for local residents critical of the administration's decision to deploy the National Guard for aggressive immigration raids. Following the verdict, a wave of journalists flooded social media with puns, with many mocking the DOJ’s failed attempt to secure a conviction for the deli-based confrontation.
