China Pavilion Debuts Carbon-Neutral Vision at UIA World Congress
At the 29th UIA World Congress of Architects in Barcelona, the China Pavilion marked a historic milestone as the first carbon-neutral exhibition in the event’s history. Curated by the Architectural Design & Research Institute of Tsinghua University, the showcase introduced a multidimensional perspective on contemporary Chinese architectural practices to a global audience.
The pavilion, titled "A Dynamic View of Contemporary Chinese Architecture (DVCA)," represents three years of development under an academic committee of 117 experts. Featuring over 350 exhibits across 11 categories—ranging from rural revitalization to urban regeneration—the display avoids a singular definition of Chinese style. Instead, it highlights how architects are balancing regional heritage with structural innovation and AI-assisted design. The physical structure itself utilizes recyclable composite panels made from eucalyptus and pine fibers, underscoring a commitment to sustainable building practices.
Beyond the physical installation, the project leveraged digital technology to reach a broader audience, launching a cloud platform that hosted 10,000 virtual visitors alongside 6,000 in-person guests. During the congress, the Architectural Society of China confirmed that Beijing will host the next UIA World Congress in 2029, signaling a growing international role for the country's professional community. Liu Yulong, the pavilion’s chief curator, emphasized that the exhibition serves as a platform for sharing how Chinese architects respond to modern realities rather than imposing a static set of design answers.
