At The Willard, CarrAmerica Marks the Nation's 250th
A "Happy Birthday USA" banner now hangs over 1455 Pennsylvania Avenue, marking the United States' 250th anniversary at the very site where Abraham Lincoln resided before his 1861 inauguration and where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. finalized his "I Have a Dream" speech hours before the March on Washington.
The installation at The Willard Center coincides with a dual milestone: the nation's semiquincentennial and the 40th anniversary of the building’s 1986 restoration. After the 1968 riots, the historic structure sat boarded up and vacant for over a decade, facing the threat of demolition before Oliver T. Carr Jr. undertook a high-stakes renovation project that many local developers initially deemed too risky to pursue.
Today, the building serves as a centerpiece of the company's legacy in Washington, D.C. real estate. CEO Wish Carr noted that the banner represents more than a holiday gesture, serving as a reminder that the site was once slated for destruction before being reclaimed as a working address. CarrAmerica plans to continue hosting programming tied to the Willard’s history throughout the remainder of 2026 as part of the broader DC250 celebrations.
