Unboxing the Trump T1: A Year-Long Wait for Golden Plastic
Exactly 12 months, 16 days, and 21 hours after ordering, the T1 Phone 8002 arrived at The Verge—or rather, three of them arrived at the wrong address. The gold-finished device, which promises a signature Trump experience, finally landed on the desk, complete with a sticky back panel and pre-installed Truth Social.
The unboxing experience feels like a relic of a different era of hardware. Inside the box, the T1 includes a standard 33W charger, a surprisingly cheap-feeling gold-and-black braided USB-C cable, and an A4 quick-start guide printed on what appears to be a basic office printer. A secondary, tiny booklet offers rudimentary instructions on basics like taking photos or making calls, underscoring that the device targets a non-technical audience.
Physically, the phone is underwhelming. The gold plastic rear panel possesses a literal tackiness, attracting dust and fingerprints instantly, while the unit arrived with a pre-existing scratch. Despite these hardware woes, the software setup proved functional; the device pulled apps from a Google backup without issue and the fingerprint sensor actually works. However, connectivity remains a hurdle. While the phone handles basic calls, it refuses to latch onto LTE or 5G networks in the UK, suggesting the hardware may be locked to American bands. A full review is expected next week.
