Phoebe Gates Enters the AI Retail Race with Phia

Phoebe Gates, daughter of Bill and Melinda Gates, has pivoted from advocacy to tech entrepreneurship with the launch of Phia. Developed alongside former roommate Sophia Kianni, the AI-driven application aims to disrupt the fashion retail market by automating price comparisons across both new and secondhand inventory for discerning shoppers.

The tool functions as an iOS app and a Chrome browser extension, embedding a "Should I Buy This?" button directly into product pages. Upon activation, the software scans a database of over 250 million items from major resale platforms including The RealReal, Vestiaire Collective, StockX, and eBay. It then evaluates the listed price against current market trends to determine if an item represents a fair value.

Testing the technology on a $1,950 Louis Vuitton Graceful PM bag reveals the app’s primary utility: it identifies cheaper secondhand alternatives while assessing the price point of the original listing. By aggregating data from diverse sources like Fashionphile and Poshmark, the platform differentiates itself from existing coupon-centric services like Honey or Rakuten. Instead of focusing solely on discount codes, Phia targets the growing appetite for sustainable thrifting, positioning itself as a specialized search engine for the fashion-conscious consumer.
