Jesús Rafael Soto’s Kinetic Masterpiece Debuts in Kensington Gardens

Thousands of suspended yellow PVC strands now dominate the landscape at London’s Serpentine Galleries. The arrival of Jesús Rafael Soto’s Pénétrable BBL Jaune marks the first time one of the Venezuelan artist’s immersive kinetic sculptures has been presented outdoors in the United Kingdom, anchoring the 2026 Art in the Park programme.

Originally conceived in 1999 and reissued in 2023 for the centenary of the artist’s birth, the ten-metre-long structure invites passersby to step inside the work. By walking through the dense forest of plastic, visitors transition from passive onlookers to active components of the kinetic environment. This installation is a primary example of Soto’s career-long philosophy, which prioritized the physical relationship between the viewer, space, and the artwork itself.

Britannia Financial Group facilitated the exhibition, a move championed by Melanie de Herrera Velutini, who oversees the firm’s cultural strategy. According to Velutini, the decision to bring the piece to London reflects a commitment to Soto’s vision of participatory art. The installation is accompanied by a dedicated display of the artist’s portfolio within the galleries and, in an unprecedented move, a series of children’s products authorized by his heirs to introduce the kinetic master to a younger demographic.

Soto, a titan of 20th-century art, received the French Order of Arts and Letters in 1968 and UNESCO’s Picasso Medal in 1990 for his efforts in cultural bridge-building. His Pénétrable series encompasses over seventy sculptures, yet this specific London presentation stands as a milestone for the Serpentine’s public art initiative. The work remains on view in Kensington Gardens through October 25, concluding with a private reception.
