Houston Breaks Ground on Third Ward Senior Housing Project
Houston Mayor John Whitmire joined community leaders and developers this week to break ground on Trinity East Village Senior, a 90-unit affordable housing complex in the historic Third Ward. The project aims to combat displacement by providing secure, low-income housing for residents aged 55 and older.

The development represents a strategic effort to allow longtime Third Ward residents to age in place despite the neighborhood’s rapid reinvestment. A central component of the initiative involves providing 60 of the 90 units as replacement housing for residents currently living in the Cuney Homes community, which is undergoing federal redevelopment. The City of Houston contributed $4 million to the project, supporting a broader financial package involving Low Income Housing Tax Credits and private debt financing.
Trinity East United Methodist Church provided the land for the site, fulfilling a multi-year vision to transform church-owned property into a community asset. Once completed in 2027, the facility will offer modern apartments alongside health and financial services coordinated by Operation Pathways. The target demographic includes extremely low- and low-income seniors, with average household incomes projected at 41 percent of the Area Median Income.
