Mark Cuban and Michael Burry Signal Alarm Over Nvidia’s AI Strategy
Billionaire investor Mark Cuban and Big Short veteran Michael Burry are raising alarms over Nvidia’s financing practices, comparing the current AI infrastructure boom to the dot-com bubble. Both warn that the chipmaker's aggressive strategy of funding its own customers could trigger a massive market collapse if the cycle falters.

Cuban likened Nvidia’s role in the AI ecosystem to the IPO frenzy of the late 1990s. By financing customer purchases of its graphics chips, the company is acting as a primary backstop for the industry. Cuban argues that this creates a dangerous dependency, noting that a single technical breakthrough from a competitor or a strategic misstep could cause the entire structure to crumble. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has previously acknowledged this central position, once quipping that the firm is effectively holding the global economy together.
Michael Burry, meanwhile, is betting against the chipmaker, citing a sharp rise in the cost of credit default swaps as evidence of institutional anxiety. Burry characterizes the current market as a cycle of circular spending, where Nvidia’s overextension to maintain demand risks creating a financial fallout of biblical proportions. Having previously profited from the housing market collapse, the investor claims that much of Nvidia’s current demand relies on off-balance-sheet financing that obscures the reality of future revenue. As of Wednesday, Nvidia shares were down 18% from their May peak, reflecting growing investor apprehension despite a thirteen-fold gain since the start of 2023.
