South Africa’s Largest Wind Cluster Hits Commercial Milestone

Developed by Seriti Green, the project represents a core component of South Africa’s Just Energy Transition. The facility’s GWH182-6.2 MW turbines were engineered specifically for Mpumalanga’s high-altitude environment and frequent storm patterns, incorporating intelligent control systems to stabilize grid connection. The site is expected to generate 480,000 MWh annually, providing electricity to roughly 500,000 households while reducing carbon emissions by 400,000 tonnes each year.

The broader Ummbila complex is designed to reach a total capacity of 750 MW of wind power, supplemented by 150 MW of solar and 800 MWh of storage by 2027. Beyond energy production, the project functions as a labor transition model, with over 50% of the roles requiring skills transferable from the coal sector. Construction of the first phase generated 1,200 jobs, a figure expected to rise to 2,000 as work on subsequent phases continues. To support long-term reliability, Goldwind has established a dedicated monitoring hub and a training facility in Cape Town, reinforcing a regional presence that is projected to exceed 2.2 GW of installed capacity by mid-2027.
