Toni Schneider on the Future of Bluesky and the Open Web

As Bluesky moves from a closed experiment to a permanent entity, new CEO Toni Schneider is tasked with balancing the platform’s Twitter-like interface with the underlying AT Protocol. Schneider argues that the future of social networking lies not in a single walled garden, but in a decentralized ecosystem where users own their data and identity.

The transition from interim to permanent CEO marks a shift in scale for Bluesky. Having previously served as CEO of Automattic, the company behind WordPress, Schneider brings a philosophy rooted in open-source development. He views the current state of social media as fragmented and increasingly hostile, positioning Bluesky as a necessary alternative that prioritizes the public good over algorithmic engagement. The company currently operates with a staff of 50, divided into teams focused on the consumer-facing app, developer tools for the ATmosphere, and experimental AI projects.

Central to the company's long-term strategy is the decentralization of the protocol itself. Schneider is actively working to divest control, with the identity directory moving to a Swiss nonprofit and the protocol specification being handed to the IETF. This approach aims to prevent the platform from becoming another closed system, ensuring that even if Bluesky the app were to fail, the broader network of interoperable applications would remain functional.

Looking ahead, the team plans to introduce private communities and new monetization models. Rather than relying solely on traditional advertising, Schneider envisions an affiliate-style system that rewards the entire ecosystem. While the platform currently carries a reputation for being a left-leaning space, Schneider maintains that the underlying protocol is neutral, designed to host any community—from sports enthusiasts to specialized professional groups—without forcing a singular culture upon its users.
