Mousterian and Samsung Heavy Industries Launch Floating Data Center Project
A new engineering contract between Dallas-based Mousterian Corporation and Samsung Heavy Industries marks the shift from concept to construction for the first moored floating data centers in the U.S. Each unit is designed to provide 50 megawatts of critical IT capacity, utilizing shipyard fabrication to accelerate deployment for AI-class compute.

The agreement, finalized on July 22, 2026, initiates the basic and detailed design phase for these purpose-built facilities. By shifting construction to a shipyard environment, the partners aim to run fabrication in parallel with land-based site preparation, circumventing the logistical bottlenecks that often delay conventional hyperscale projects. The American Bureau of Shipping is expected to oversee the classification of these units as they move toward a definitive Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contract.
Technologically, the design moves away from traditional air-cooled systems. The floating units will utilize non-evaporative cooling that requires no potable water and generates zero process discharge, significantly lowering the facility's environmental footprint. By co-locating these units with existing power generation assets and maritime infrastructure, Mousterian and Samsung Heavy Industries intend to tap into stranded energy capacity that is otherwise inaccessible to standard land-based data centers. This approach minimizes noise pollution and optimizes power usage effectiveness for high-density, liquid-cooled artificial intelligence workloads.
