Lockheed Martin X-62 VISTA Executes First Sensor-Driven AI Intercepts

At Edwards Air Force Base, the X-62 VISTA aircraft has successfully completed 27 AI-controlled air intercepts against a live T-38 target. By integrating real-time infrared sensor data into its flight systems, the aircraft demonstrated a critical shift from simulated environments to autonomous combat maneuvers in actual flight conditions.

The flight series, conducted alongside the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, utilized the Lockheed Martin Legion Pod to feed live infrared search and track data directly to an onboard AI agent. This agent autonomously piloted the X-62 into tactical intercept positions, a process that relies on the company’s "Supermassive" AI generation capability. The development cycle for these agents was condensed into just three months, moving from initial integration to full flight execution.

Ron Fehlen, vice president at Skunk Works, noted that the agents effectively closed the sensor-to-action loop using classified data feeds. Beyond technical validation, the project aims to augment pilot capabilities by delegating complex combat maneuvers to autonomous systems. This integration is designed to increase pilot survivability by freeing up cognitive bandwidth during high-stakes engagements. Future efforts will focus on incorporating these mission systems into a broader mesh network, further testing the seamless connection between combat sensors and autonomous flight control.
