Blue Water Autonomy Lands Naval Contract for Deep-Sea Mapping
The U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office has tapped Boston-based Blue Water Autonomy for a multi-year, indefinite-quantity contract to map the deep ocean floor. The firm will deploy long-endurance uncrewed surface vessels across the Indian and Pacific oceans, competing for a portion of the $40 million ceiling set by the military agency.
Deep-ocean surveying requires navigating harsh, shifting environments that dictate how naval forces maneuver far from home ports. By shifting this burden to autonomous platforms, the Navy aims to cut the daily operational costs associated with crewed vessels, which can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. The initiative specifically targets terrain and acoustic characterization, moving assets thousands of nautical miles offshore for missions lasting months at a time.
Blue Water Autonomy CEO Rylan Hamilton noted that the selection validates the company’s focus on high-endurance, long-range maritime operations. Founded in 2024, the firm integrates proprietary AI and hardware systems designed to keep vessels operational in the open ocean without human intervention. This contract positions the company to scale its technology across vast maritime theaters, fulfilling a critical requirement for the NAVOCEANO and the broader naval fleet.
