Google expands AI tools to minors via NotebookLM

Teachers gain a dedicated Gemini tab within Google Classroom, designed to assist with drafting emails, generating lesson plans, and creating math problems. For districts utilizing the Education Plus Edition, the platform will offer audio lessons and advanced analytics to monitor student performance, specifically flagging those who require additional support or have fallen behind on assignments. The expansion into NotebookLM allows students to utilize interactive study guides and podcast-style audio overviews generated from teacher-provided source materials.

Educators can now deploy custom Gems—miniature Gemini agents tailored to specific curricula—which students can query for academic assistance. Administrators have also been granted the ability to distribute these custom agents across their districts. Beyond AI-driven content, Google is launching Class Tools, a management feature that lets teachers push quizzes, videos, or presentations directly to student Chromebooks while restricting screen distractions. The company also announced that Gemini Education is becoming the standard tier for base-level accounts, providing users with the Gemini 1.5 Pro model and higher usage limits than standard consumer versions.
