Ian McClure to Expand Planet Fitness Footprint in Florida
Ian McClure, the veteran real estate developer behind Gulf Coast Hotel Management, has signed three new development agreements with Planet Fitness. The move marks a significant expansion for the fitness chain, targeting fresh locations along Florida’s west coast to grow its presence in the competitive regional health market.

McClure brings a background in multi-unit hospitality to his new role as a franchisee. As CEO of the Dallas-based Gulf Coast Hotel Management, he currently oversees more than 30 extended-stay properties across Texas, Florida, and Colorado, while managing real estate assets in 14 states. His transition into the fitness sector leverages years of experience in retail and multifamily development.
Chip Ohlsson, Chief Development Officer at Planet Fitness, noted that the partnership reflects broader confidence in the brand's growth trajectory. For his part, McClure cited the company's established model and accessibility as primary motivators for the expansion. Planet Fitness currently operates approximately 2,930 clubs globally, maintaining a membership base of 21.5 million people as of June 30, 2026. Roughly 90% of these locations are managed by independent operators, a structure that the company continues to prioritize as it seeks new sites in both domestic and international markets.
