PTO Today Launches National Campaign to Recruit One Million School Volunteers
Fifty-four percent of parent-teacher organizations across the United States have been forced to cancel or scale back school events due to chronic volunteer shortages. PTO Today is responding to this gap with the launch of the "1 Hour for Schools" initiative, a campaign aiming to secure one million pledged volunteer hours.
The movement encourages parents and caregivers to commit just sixty minutes of their time, emphasizing that local schools do not require superheroes to function, but rather a broader base of participation. Current data highlights a significant reliance on a very small core of people; 82% of school parent groups operate with fewer than 10 active volunteers. While many of these individuals dedicate up to 360 hours per academic year, the burden is becoming unsustainable for the existing volunteer pool.
Beyond addressing operational needs for field days, book fairs, and teacher appreciation programs, the campaign seeks to foster deeper community ties. School Family Media CEO Charles Field notes that the initiative aims to lower the barrier to entry for parents who may feel they lack the time or specific skills to contribute. With 74% of parent groups identifying fathers as the most underrepresented demographic, organizers hope the low-commitment model will broaden the scope of engagement.
