Z Advanced Computing Secures Air Force Contract for Cognitive AI
With a 25 million dollar sole-source contract from the US Air Force in hand, Potomac-based Z Advanced Computing is pivoting its brain-inspired software toward the challenges of fully autonomous driving, aiming to replace standard deep learning models with a system that mimics human-level situational awareness.

The startup, known as ZAC, is positioning its Cognitive Explainable AI (CXAI) as a lean alternative to the industry-standard neural networks that currently dominate the field. By utilizing concept-learning algorithms, the technology requires only 5 to 50 training samples to function, a stark departure from the billions of data points typically demanded by current deep learning, transformer, or generative AI architectures. This efficiency allows for lower computational overhead, reduced energy consumption, and a significantly smaller carbon footprint, making it a viable candidate for edge computing environments where cloud connectivity is either unavailable or unreliable.
Beyond military applications, the company is targeting the automotive sector to solve the persistent issues of AI "hallucinations" and the "black box" problem inherent in existing neural nets. Under the leadership of Dr. Saied Tadayon, a former Cornell math prodigy, the firm has built a portfolio of over 450 inventions and 15 issued US patents. The project's technical rigor is backed by a high-profile advisory board that includes Nobel Laureates David Lee and Roald Hoffmann, as well as LASIK inventor Dr. Gholam Peyman and the late fuzzy logic pioneer Lotfi Zadeh.
