Amazon’s Texas Data Center Project Risks Massive Greenhouse Gas Output

A massive natural-gas power facility planned for Pecos County, Texas, threatens to become one of the largest single sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Designed to power an exclusive Amazon data center, the site is permitted to release up to 33 million tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The project, known as GW Ranch, utilizes 35 gas-burning turbines to generate 7.65 gigawatts of electricity. Unlike standard facilities integrated into the state grid, this plant operates primarily to satisfy the intensive energy requirements of Amazon's local infrastructure. Data from Cleanview indicates the facility's emission permit exceeds the output of the nation’s largest coal-fired power plants, though actual operating levels often remain below theoretical maximums.

Amazon confirmed its ownership of the site and its intent to purchase the generated power, marking a departure from the company’s stated climate goals. This move reflects a broader trend among major tech firms, including Meta and Google, which are increasingly funding private fossil-fuel energy sources to keep pace with the surge in artificial intelligence demand. With the current regulatory environment favoring the easing of pollution restrictions, the project highlights the growing friction between expanding digital infrastructure and corporate environmental commitments.
