Flatbike Launches Kit to Shrink Bicycles for Indoor Storage
A bicycle occupies a significant footprint in most urban apartments, often forcing owners to risk theft by leaving their rides outside. At the Outdoor Retailer show in Minneapolis, Flatbike is debuting a kit designed to collapse standard bikes to a third of their size in seconds, without requiring tools.
The Flatten-Your-Bike Kit centers on two ISO-4210 tested components: the THINstem folding stem and the company’s signature Pop-Off Pedals. By replacing stock parts with these elements, cyclists can tuck a bike flat against a wall, clearing floor space in cramped living areas. The kit incorporates the fifth iteration of the THINstem, a component previously developed by Canada’s Revelo Bikes, which now falls under the Flatbike brand umbrella.
According to data from the non-profit Bike Index, 59% of bicycle thefts occur on the owner’s residential property, such as porches or storage cages. Flatbike president Bob Forgrave notes that the solution targets a growing urban demographic struggling to balance bike ownership with limited interior space and rising e-bike weights. Beyond security, storing bikes indoors protects them from rust caused by condensation and simplifies transport, as the flattened profile eliminates the risks of scratched paint or entangled handlebars when loading onto vehicle racks.
