DuPage Schools Roll Out Digital Mental Health Screening Tools

As classrooms reopen in DuPage County, the Regional Office of Education is deploying a comprehensive mental health initiative to identify student needs before they escalate. By securing free access to the MARO screening platform for Area 1 districts, officials aim to provide early intervention for thousands of students.

The initiative addresses the growing pressures of anxiety, depression, and school avoidance by embedding emotional well-being into the daily academic environment. Regional Superintendent Amber Quirk emphasized that academic success relies heavily on a student’s sense of belonging and emotional health. Through a partnership with MARO and the West 40 Intermediate Service Center, the office has eliminated the financial barriers that typically prevent districts from adopting advanced screening technology.

This shift also prepares local schools for the Illinois State Board of Education’s upcoming universal mental health screening mandate for the 2027–2028 academic year. The automated nature of the MARO platform allows districts to scale their support systems without overtaxing limited clinical staff. Beyond the software, the Regional Office is providing monthly webinars, parent communication templates, and case studies to help schools integrate these tools into their existing support frameworks.

For families navigating specific behavioral health challenges, officials are also promoting the BEACON service from the Illinois Department of Public Health. This resource assists parents in locating tailored community-based programs and state-funded support. Paula Kennedy, Director of School Culture and Climate, urges families to engage with school counselors and social workers early, treating mental health support as a foundational component of the educational experience rather than a separate concern.
