Dr. Justin Houman Launches Specialized Male Fertility Program in LA
With male factors contributing to half of all infertility cases, Los Angeles urologist Dr. Justin Houman has introduced a dedicated Male Fertility Restoration Program. The initiative challenges the common medical practice of bypassing male diagnostic evaluations, aiming to identify and treat correctable issues before couples commit to assisted reproduction.

The American Urological Association and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine report that male infertility is the sole cause in 20 to 30 percent of cases and a contributing factor in another 20 to 30 percent. Despite these statistics, clinical evaluations for men are often deferred or limited to a basic semen analysis. Because male infertility frequently presents without symptoms, many couples invest significant time and financial resources into treatment plans that ignore the root cause.
Dr. Houman’s approach begins with a comprehensive workup, including physical examinations, hormone testing, and scrotal imaging. Depending on the findings, clinical pathways may include microsurgical varicocelectomy to address enlarged veins, hormonal therapy, or surgical sperm retrieval. By reassessing patients on a 90-day cycle—reflecting the time required for sperm maturation—the program determines whether natural conception or less invasive fertility interventions become viable options. The practice coordinates with reproductive endocrinologists to ensure that if IVF remains necessary, the quality of sperm is optimized for the procedure.
