Aisha Wahab Defeats Millions in Outside Spending in California House Race

Progressive state Senator Aisha Wahab secured a victory in California’s special congressional election, overcoming millions of dollars in spending by AIPAC-affiliated super PACs. The win marks a significant test of grassroots organizing against heavy-spending outside groups in a district previously held by former Representative Eric Swalwell.

Wahab, who campaigned on a platform of reducing prescription drug costs and ending long-term military engagements, will hold the seat for California’s 14th Congressional District through January. Her victory came 48 hours after polls closed, concluding one of the most expensive and contentious contests in the region. She is set to face Bay Area Rapid Transit board member Melissa Hernandez again in November for a full two-year term.

The contest drew massive financial intervention from the United Democracy Project, AIPAC's super PAC, which spent $2.5 million to support Hernandez, alongside additional millions from the PAC known as BOLD America. In contrast, Wahab’s campaign relied on support from labor organizations and the leadership PACs of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and Representative Pramila Jayapal.

Joseph Geevarghese, executive director of the advocacy group Our Revolution, described the result as a blueprint for future progressive campaigns. While the influx of outside capital fueled television advertisements and mailers, Geevarghese argued that the outcome proved direct voter engagement remains the most potent tool in electoral politics. With the special election results showing a tighter margin than previous primary contests, the upcoming November rematch is expected to remain a high-stakes battleground.
