Tesla quietly retires Solar Roof tiles
Three thousand installations over eight years marks the end of a project once heralded as a residential energy revolution. Tesla has effectively shuttered its Solar Roof business, pivoting away from the aesthetic shingles to focus exclusively on conventional solar panels and battery storage systems as it eyes a massive production expansion.

The shift became evident as Tesla’s dedicated Solar Roof landing page began redirecting visitors to standard solar panel offerings, removing the product from its official energy navigation menu. While the company has yet to issue a formal press release, third-party installers have confirmed they are no longer taking orders for the integrated tiles. This quiet sunset follows years of internal struggle; CEO Elon Musk previously admitted to significant execution errors that hampered both production timelines and cost efficiency.
Market data underscores the scale of the underperformance. A 2023 Wood Mackenzie report estimated that the shingles reached only 3,000 homes, falling drastically short of the company’s original goal of 1,000 installations per week. With the tile project deemed financially non-viable, Tesla is reallocating its resources toward traditional solar arrays. The company is currently moving forward with plans for a $10 billion factory near Houston, Texas, intended to scale its conventional energy hardware and Powerwall production.
