Choose Health Debuts At-Home Liver Screening to Combat Silent Epidemic
Roughly 100 million Americans currently live with liver disease, yet most remain unaware of their condition until significant damage occurs. Austin-based health tech firm Choose Health is attempting to bridge this diagnostic gap by launching a comprehensive at-home test that tracks over 20 liver-specific biomarkers and metabolic risk scores.

The new testing kit utilizes a simple finger-prick blood sample to analyze a broad spectrum of indicators, including AST, ALT, GGT, albumin, and bilirubin. By incorporating metabolic markers such as HbA1c, fasting insulin, and lipid panels, the test provides a more nuanced view of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). These data points feed into standardized clinical indices, such as the Fatty Liver Index and Hepatic Steatosis Index, to help users identify potential patterns of concern before they escalate.
Mark Holland, founder of Choose Health, describes the condition as arguably the most underdiagnosed in the country. While global prevalence is estimated at 38% and projected to climb past 55% by 2040, the company emphasizes that early detection allows for lifestyle interventions that can halt or even reverse damage. Dr. Alan Farrell, the company’s Chief Medical Officer, notes that individual enzyme readings often lack context; however, combining these markers into established clinical scores offers a clearer picture of hepatic health.
The test is currently available in 48 states, excluding New York and Rhode Island. Results are reviewed by licensed physicians and delivered within days, providing a consumer-facing tool that aligns with rising public interest in metabolic health and GLP-1 medications. Since its inception in 2018, Choose Health has processed over 200,000 tests through CLIA-certified laboratories.
