Ballard Power Systems Acquires GeoPura for £275 Million
Ballard Power Systems has finalized its acquisition of UK-based GeoPura in a deal valued at £275 million, signaling a shift toward becoming a fully integrated Energy-as-a-Service provider. By merging its fuel cell technology with GeoPura’s hydrogen production and logistics, the company aims to dominate the zero-emission power market.

The transaction includes £82.5 million in cash, supplemented by approximately 49.6 million newly issued Ballard shares. A further 1.08 million shares will be settled in one year, with up to £27.5 million in contingent consideration tied to specific financial milestones. Following the acquisition, former GeoPura shareholders now hold roughly 14.1% of Ballard’s outstanding common shares.
GeoPura, founded in 2019, specializes in Hydrogen Power Units (HPUs) that utilize Ballard fuel cell modules to provide off-grid electricity. Beyond hardware, the firm maintains the UK’s largest compressed hydrogen distribution fleet. This infrastructure allows Ballard to offer a turnkey model, moving beyond mere component manufacturing to end-to-end energy delivery.
Leadership changes accompany the integration: Andrew Cunningham, formerly of GeoPura, has been named President of Ballard. Alongside Lord Richard Harrington, Cunningham will also join the company's Board of Directors. The merger is expected to strengthen Ballard’s footprint across Europe and accelerate its expansion into North American markets, providing a scalable alternative to fossil-fuel-reliant power grids.
