Sophia Space Secures $300 Million to Launch Orbital Edge Computing

Sophia Space is moving orbital infrastructure from the lab to orbit with a $300 million financing framework from SLI. The deal, which utilizes asset-based leasing models common in aviation and energy, will fund the construction and deployment of 10 high-performance edge computing satellites starting in 2028.

The agreement allows SLI, an aerospace subsidiary of the Libra Group, to purchase the TILE satellites from Sophia and lease them to end-users through fixed payment schedules. This structure enables the company to scale its orbital footprint while preserving equity capital for research and operations. Once operational, the 10-satellite network will provide computing capacity equivalent to 240 advanced edge servers.

Rob DeMillo, CEO and co-founder of Sophia Space, stated that the partnership signals the maturity of orbital infrastructure, proving it can attract the same capital structures that historically built terrestrial industries. The constellation aims to support diverse applications, ranging from weather analytics and supply-chain management to mission-critical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance services.

SLI CEO Praveen Vetrivel noted that the framework addresses a critical gap in the sector by providing scalable, non-dilutive capital. By aligning financing with the satellites' expected useful lives, the companies intend to create a repeatable playbook for future orbital deployments, moving beyond exclusive reliance on equity financing.
