Waters Launches BD FACSDiscover A7 to Scale Spectral Flow Cytometry

By integrating automated quality control with high-resolution imaging, Waters Corporation’s new BD FACSDiscover A7 Cell Analyzer targets a critical bottleneck in laboratory research: the variability of data across different users and instruments. The A7 system incorporates BD SpectralFX technology, a platform previously featured in the flagship A8 model. This architecture allows scientists to analyze over 50 cellular characteristics simultaneously using up to five lasers and 78 fluorescence detectors. To address the historical challenge of experimental inconsistency, the new analyzer employs FACSTruQ technology. This innovation automates instrument calibration and quality control, maintaining a coefficient of variation below 10% across a palette of 50 dyes.

Cheryl Kim, Senior Director of the Flow Cytometry Core at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, noted that the system lowers barriers to advanced spectral analysis, facilitating deeper biological insights for immune system research. By pairing these hardware capabilities with integrated autoloaders and guided software workflows, Waters intends to accelerate drug development and biomarker discovery. The instrument is now available for global commercial order, marking a strategic expansion of the company’s analytical ecosystem following its acquisition of BD Biosciences and Diagnostic Solutions.
