Don Lemon and Georgia Fort Arrested Following Church Protest Coverage

The former CNN anchor was apprehended in Los Angeles while covering the Grammy Awards, according to his attorney, Abbe Lowell. His arrest follows the federal government’s persistent efforts to pursue charges related to an immigration protest held at a Minnesota church, an event where the congregation’s pastor also serves as a federal immigration official. A magistrate judge had previously rejected a request for an arrest warrant in the case, finding the evidence insufficient.

Independent journalist Georgia Fort was also detained in Minneapolis, a development she broadcast via social media as federal agents arrived at her home. Local political candidates Trahern Jeen Crews and Jamael Lydell Lundy were also named in Attorney General Pam Bondi’s statement regarding the detentions. Lemon, who maintains he was present solely to chronicle the demonstration, intends to challenge the prosecution’s characterization of his work as anything other than journalism.

Advocates have mobilized against the administration, framing the arrests as a calculated attempt to intimidate the press. Seth Stern of the Freedom of the Press Foundation described the actions as "naked attacks" on constitutional rights, warning that the government is utilizing "bogus legal theories" to create a chilling effect on reporters. While the administration continues its pursuit, Lemon’s legal team has signaled a rigorous defense, asserting that the veteran journalist was performing duties protected by the First Amendment.
