Family Releases Video of Mahmoud Khalil’s Arrest by DHS Agents

Khalil’s wife, Noor, who is eight months pregnant, described the encounter as a terrifying ordeal that left her and legal counsel unaware of his location for 38 hours. Khalil, an Algerian citizen of Palestinian descent, is currently being held at a detention facility in Jena, Louisiana, over 1,000 miles from his home. His supporters and legal team argue the detention is a targeted act of political retaliation for his leadership in pro-Palestinian campus protests.

A coalition of legal advocates, including the ACLU, the Center for Constitutional Rights, and the CLEAR project, has challenged the government’s actions. While a judge has issued a temporary stay on his deportation, attorneys are pushing for his immediate release. NYCLU executive director Donna Lieberman stated the government lacks a constitutional basis to detain individuals solely for expressing dissent, characterizing the arrest as a calculated effort to suppress First Amendment-protected speech.
