Indiana American Water Launches $2.2 Million Training Hub in Gary

Located at 650 Madison Street, the center functions as an outdoor mini-city, allowing employees to simulate complex field tasks like water main repairs, confined-space procedures, and utility locating in a controlled environment. By moving beyond classroom theory, the company aims to sharpen operational readiness and safety standards across its regional infrastructure.

Beyond technical training, the facility acts as the primary headquarters for the Flow Forward program. During the opening, students from GEO 21st Century Academy toured the site to engage with professionals in engineering, technology, and wastewater operations. Barry Suits, president of Indiana American Water, described the initiative as a pathway for younger generations to discover careers that protect public health and sustain local economies.

This investment is part of a broader $38 million capital commitment to the Gary area, following a $23.5 million water main replacement project and $4.3 million in office renovations. These upgrades underscore a long-term strategy to modernize regional utilities while fostering a pipeline of skilled labor for the state’s essential services.
