Google Pixel Watch 4 signals a shift for Android wearables
Five years ago, reviewing an Android smartwatch felt like a chore, plagued by dismal battery life and a fragmented ecosystem. Today, the $349.99 Google Pixel Watch 4 defies those low expectations, emerging as the most compelling flagship wearable of the season by refining both its internal architecture and software experience.
While the exterior remains identical to its predecessor, the fourth-generation watch introduces significant hardware improvements. Google has pivoted toward longevity and maintenance, making the device repairable while upgrading the internal components. Users now benefit from a faster processor, enhanced haptics, a new speaker, and increased battery capacity that enables faster charging cycles. The transition to Wear OS 6 brings the Material 3 Expressive design language to the wrist, alongside a Gemini integration that supports a new raise-to-talk gesture.
Fitness tracking also sees a notable boost through dual-frequency GPS and more reliable automatic activity detection. Despite these gains, the ecosystem still faces minor hurdles. The watch requires a new proprietary charger—the third iteration in four years—and the GPS mapping software occasionally falters. Even with those quirks, the inclusion of Satellite SOS and a refined, domed display positions the Pixel Watch 4 as a genuine contender that finally moves beyond the limitations of earlier Android watch generations.
